Upgrades for Moebius 1/4105 Classic Battlestar Galactica

Now here is something every fan of the classic Battlestar Galactica should have, a compact sized and near exact replica of the Colonial Capital ship in a plastic kit form. By comparison to Monogram/Revell's version, the new Moebius kit literally blows that one away in terms of her accuracy, details and presentation. Fully build up, she really does look like an actual Battlestar instead of a hunch backed platypus the Monogram/Revell kit produced. You can see much research and thought had been put in when producing this kit, and it is literally what fans have been crying for for years. Yes, we want a kit that we don't have to butcher just to get that original classic look.

The new kit is also in 1/4105 scale, in tandem with Monogram/Revell's version, and also in scale with the new mini series Galactica kit (from Moebius as well). She can be easily built right out of the box (relatively easy too) but do test the fittings first. Moebius's objective was to produce a kit that was affordable, fun to build and close to her original counterpart as possible. So with the issue of cost in mind, they did their best and released this gem to the delight of fans worldwide.

And then of course there are those who seek to improvise on the details to make her more like her studio model (me included). So what did we do? We yearn for aftermarket parts. So if you are anything like me and want your kit to stand out among the crowd, here are a few available products you want to get.

More after the jump.

Paragrafix's Original Series Galactica (1978) Photoetch Set

Add exciting new details with this photo etch set which includes super-fine gridwork for the landing decks and engine inserts, complete with holes for easy lighting (electronics not included). Over 65 pieces to enhance all aspects of this fantastic new kit.

The Moebius kit only provided an image mock up of the hangar bay landing decks which you need to cut off from the side of it's box. The illustration there is the same one done for the actual studio model but with Paragrafix's set, than landing deck is now in 3D - more realistic.

Engine inserts exactly as seen with the studio model.

This itsie bitsie piece actually enhances over the original part which was molded a tad too soft. You can purchase this photo etch set HERE.

Detailed parts from Shapeways.

In case you have never heard of Shapeways, this is a fantastic site consisting of people willing to 3D print anything ... for a price and if those things are printable. With the advent of new technology, scale modeling can now be emulated to greater heights with these fantastic 3D printers.

For the Moebius kit, you want to look for TonyRR's contributions there. He has reproduced a detailed replica of the nose detail and bridge. If you look at the second and third image of the studio model below, you will notice that the bridge section is elevated upward like a balcony, while the nose details have more gaps and space between it and the main body.

You can order these replacement combo set HERE

Another area you want to consider replacing are the Galactica's Domes which you can get HERE

All of these were originally done for the large Salzo's Galactica resin kit, which they were then shrunk to 1/4105 scale for the Moebius kit.

Madman Lighting Original Battlestar Lighting Kit

And lastly, liven up your kit with her lighting. Madman Lighting have actually come up with a nice comprehensive lighting set to to give your Galactica kit some life. It's not very expensive and you can get her HERE.
